The John Charnley Research Institute

"A new surgical science - total prosthetic joint replacement - has suddenly come into being".
Charnley 1970

Sound scientific basis, continuity of the method and excellent clinical results created the demand for the Charnley hip replacement. As a result a number of new issues had to be addressed.

  • Training of surgeons in the Charnley technique.
  • Provide follow-up facilities with detailed recording of the information.
  • Availability of expertise in complex surgery and management of complications
  • Study the long-term clinical results and detailed examination of explanted materials in collaboration with Industry and Universities (Leeds, Manchester, Durham, Imperial College London).
Advancement of designs, materials and surgical techniques, based on sound evidence.
  • Dissemination of information through teaching sessions, scientific meetings, publications and observations of live surgery.
  • Advancement of Information Technology demanded that the details stored on hand written punch-cards designed by Charnley, had to be expanded and transcribed to bespoke databases.

Continuing monitoring of long-term follow-up results, assessing the outcomes of innovation and processing the information demanded the establishment of a dedicated unit - The John Charnley Research Institute.

Since 1962, over 440 surgeons have trained at Wrightington in the Charnley technique of total hip replacement, many coming from as far away as Argentina, Australia and Japan.
